What is Section 80G of the Income Tax Act?

Section 80G is a provision that allows donors to claim a tax deduction on donations made to eligible charitable institutions, trusts, and relief funds registered under this section. It encourages philanthropy by reducing the donor's taxable income in proportion to their contribution.

What tax exemption benefit do I get?

Depending on the organization's registration category, you can claim either 50% or 100% of your donated amount as a deduction from your taxable income (some categories are subject to a qualifying limit of 10% of your adjusted gross total income). This deduction is available only under the old tax regime, not the new one.

What is the minimum amount that needs to be donated to get a tax exemption?

[This is a policy decision for your organization to set and state here — many NGOs specify a minimum like ₹500 or ₹1,000 for issuing an 80G receipt. Let me know your organization's threshold and I'll fill this in.]

Do you issue tax receipts? How long does it take?

Yes, a receipt is issued within 10 working days via email/post.

Are there tax exemptions on cash donations as well?

Cash donations are eligible for tax exemption only up to ₹2,000. Cash donations above ₹2,000 are not eligible for deduction under Section 80G — such donations must be made via cheque, bank transfer, UPI, demand draft, or another digital/banking mode to qualify.

When can I get a tax exemption certificate?

Donors need Form 10BE (the official donation certificate) to claim the deduction. This is generated only after the CRI files Form 10BD with the Income Tax Department. Certificates are generally issued within 30 days of the financial year-end.
